WORLD NO. 2 MARTIN KAYMER CONFIRMS PARTICIPATION AT THE MAYBANK MALAYSIAN OPEN 2011

Martin Kaymer, world no 2 golfer
Kaymer joins Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Rory McIlroy for tournament

Kuala Lumpur, 24 February 2011 - Maybank today announced that German golf sensation, Martin Kaymer will add to the headlines of the 156-men playing field at the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 alongside South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel and Ireland's Rory McIlroy at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club from 14 -17 April 2011.

Kaymer, 26, is currently ranked no. 2 in the world after recently claiming his third Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship title in four years to add to his three individual titles in 2010. He was also a member of the winning European Ryder Cup Team. He became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win three successive tournaments in a year and the first European to achieve this feat since Nick Faldo in 1989.

"We are delighted with Martin Kaymer's participation at the Maybank Malaysian Open celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. This will surely raise the stakes in the game. To have such a sensational star alongside the three international golfers already confirmed - Oosthuizen, Schwartzel and McIlroy, will certainly add grandeur and interest in the Maybank Malaysian Open. This is by far our most impressive line up of players at the Maybank Malaysian Open," said Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, Chairman of Maybank.

Maybank also announced two local golfers Khor Kheng Hwai and Mohd Sukree Othman under its invitation to play alongside some of the world's best with hopes to create history as the first Malaysian winner.

Khor Kheng Hwai has participated in various major events in the span of his career including the Brunei Open 2010, The King's Cup 2010 and The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters 2009. Up to date, Khor's best result was produced at the Indonesia Presidential Invitational 2010 where he tied for 40th place.

Mohd Sukree Othman was among top 5 to qualify for the Maybank Malaysian Open through the National Qualifiers in 2010. Sukree emerged as runner-up in two separate occasions - Professional Golf Association ff Malaysia Golf Classic 2010 and the 18th HLA-Saujana Amateur Open 2005, which boosted the credentials of his career as an amateur.

"Khor and Sukree have both contributed to our local golf industry through their unwavering devotion and dedication in representing Malaysia in local and foreign competition. Khor's overseas participation has produced satisfactory outcomes, proving that it is possible for a local golfer to achieve a great feat playing in a foreign green. Sukree, on the other hand is revered as a dedicated professional golf coach. Together with the other Malaysia players, we hope our local boys will shine in this year's Open," added Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor.

In addition to Maybank's exemption announcement, event organizers, GlobalOne has also announced one of their nominated players - Nicholas Fung who will participate at the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 under Global One's invitation. 21-year old Nicholas Fung had a successful amateur career with several wins next to his name including the Sabah International Junior Masters in 2008.

"We have chosen Nicholas Fung as he has performed well in the last couple of years and feel he will be able to represent Malaysia to the best of his ability", said John Eu, Chief Executive Officer, GlobalOne.

Making history as the first ever co-sanctioned tournament in Asia by both the European and Asian Tours in 1999, the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 will feature top players from the rankings of both these world-leading circuits to make up the 156-player line-up.

A star-studded field is expected at the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open vying for the USD 2.5 million prize purse and spectators can expect an exciting tournament this April. The four-day co-sanctioned event will take place at the West Course of the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club from 14th - 17th April 2011.

Points earned at the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 will go towards the Asian Tour Order of Merit, and will also add to the player's 2011 Race to Dubai Ranking, granting them a chance to qualify for the season-ending Dubai World Championship.

man goes wire-to-wire to win the Ladies Division of the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open

Gavin Kyle Green, 18, pulled put birdies and an eagle for a 6-under-par 66 Friday to finish with an 8-under-par 208 to win the Men Division at the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open. In the Ladies Division, Iman Ahmad Nordin, 19, fired 1-over-par 73 to pick up the win, finishing at 3-under-par 213.

Managed by the Malaysian Golf Association, the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open features 110 players from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Myanmar. The event, which is being played for the fourth time in Bukit Jalil, is being sponsored by Berjaya Sompo Insurance Berhad also for the fourth consecutive time.

Every year the event attracts a large number of participants to compete for the events top honours. This tournament has been included in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) since 2008, which is managed by R&A.

Gavin knew that if he played safe and steady in the final round, he will secure the win as he was leading 2 strokes coming into the final round.

"I knew that I have a chance to win if I did not make any silly mistakes", Gavin said. "I was so happy when I scored an eagle at the 11th hole which boosted my confidence to win today."

Finished second in the Men Division is the first round leader, Kenneth de Silva who carded final round score of 4-over-par 76 for 3-day totals of 4-over-par 220. 1 stroke behind runner up is SingaporeĆ¢€™s Koh Dengshan who scored 4-over-par 76 today for a 5-over-par 221 tournament total. It may have seemed like Iman had a comfortable lead, but she didn't take things for granted. She knew that she had to play well in order to win as the field consisted of many good ladies amateurs.

"I am really happy to win the first state amateur open for the year," Iman said. "This win is for my parents who have supported me through thick and thin".

Jessica Lydia from Indonesia took second place after firing a 5-over-par 79 to finish with an 8-over-par 224 and tied for third are Yin May Myo of Myanmar and Nur Durriyah of Malaysia with a 12-over-par 228 for the three rounds.

A'FAMOSA TO HOST THE 109TH MALAYSIAN AMATEUR OPEN

A'Famosa set to host the 109th Malaysian Amateur Open. It was announced today at the Press Conference held at MGA's office. The tournament will be held from May 19-22, 2011.

The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) will be organising the prestigious Malaysian Amateur Open in historical Malacca from May 19 to 22, 2011 with the A'Famosa Golf Resort as the host venue of the nation's oldest amateur tournament.

Attracting participants mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, Malaysian contenders are no more accorded automatic entry as they are required to qualify through the Sabah Amateur Open, Sarawak Amateur Open and Malaysian Amateur Close tournaments.

"The MGA is working towards achieving the target of having Malaysian champions in both the men's and the newly created ladies' division. It has been a while since we've had a Malaysian name engraved on the championship trophy," said MGA President, Datuk Robin Loh.

"As locals no longer enjoy automatic entry, the MAO is a culmination of the qualifying rounds for the Peninsular (45th Malaysian Amateur Close scheduled for April 5-7), Sabah Amateur Open (April 22-24) and Sarawak Amateur Open (May 13-15)."

Since its inauguration in 1894, the Malaysian Amateur Open Golf Championship (now better known as the MAO) has gone through several transformations in name, challenge trophies, title sponsors and format of play.

This will be only the third edition that will include a ladies' division after it was introduced at the 107th Malaysian Amateur Open at the Kelab Golf Sarawak in 2009.

R. Nachimuthu was the last Malaysian to have won the title when the championship was held at the Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah in 1997. There have been several near-misses for our players as was the case with Mohd Iylia Jamil finishing runner-up to champion Mhark Fernando of the Philippines at the Damai Laut Golf & Country Club last year.

In the ladies' division, 17-year-old Thidapa Suwannapura from Thailand overcame a three-stroke deficit in the final round to clinch the title by two shots over compatriot Yupaporn Kawinpakorn with our national player Kelly Tan finishing third in the 2010 edition.

"It is an honour for us here at A'Famosa Golf Resort being given the opportunity to host the Malaysian Amateur Open for the first time. We started priming the 6,397-metre, par-72 combination of Rocky and Palm Courses since late 2010 to ensure its tip-top condition, befitting the stature of the tournament," said Julian Lau Joo Liang, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of A'Famosa Golf Resort.

The Malaysian Amateur Open has been a fertile ground in producing top players as evident by its list of past champions that include the likes of Australians Robert Allenby and Andrew Dodt, Singapore's Mardan Mamat, Filipino Juvic Pagunsan and India's Shiv Kapur.

Having survived the colonial era, two World Wars and the upheavals of the nation to the major amateur golf championship that it has become today, the Malaysian Amateur Open's steady rise in stature was further cemented in 2006 when it was included as an event in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, which ranks the world's top amateur golfers.

In its effort to unearth new golfing talents, the MGA will also be conducting a Junior Golf Clinic in tandem with the 109th Malaysian Amateur Open at the A'Famosa Golf Resort.

Junior golfer says overseas training scholarship a valuable experience

Junior golfer says overseas training scholarship a valuable experience

It was a new learning experience for Chang Ervin when he attended a training stint at the TPC Sawgrass in Florida, United States recently.

Ervin, a Form One student of Seri Suria, said the stint gave him an opportunity to experience the life of a professional golfer.

“I had the chance to meet some of the world’s top professional golfers such as Vijay Singh, Fred Funk, Natalie Gulbis and Nick Price. I would cherish the stint for a long time,’’ said Ervin after a training session at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club recently.

Proud feat: Ervin with the prize he received after the training stint in Florida.
Ervin was one of eight junior golfers from the Asean region to be awarded the overseas training scholarship.

The others were Malaysia’s Loy Hee Ying, Indonesians Jordan Surya Irawan and Nadya Rosiana, Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Virunpat Olankitkunchai and Singaporeans Tan Yan Ming and Rachel Lim.

The eight were selected by CIMB after a series of training camps conducted by the PGA Tour Academy from June to September last year.

CIMB initiated the camp in conjunction with the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic held at the Mines Resort and Golf Club.

PGA Tour Academy coaches —Travis Fulton, Shane Gillespie and John Stahlschmidt — conducted the camp.

Ervin said the coaches were helpful and evaluated his techniques especially swing and putting.

“They used a 3D equipment to analyse my putting and swing. It was discovered that my shoulder was too open. Now I have a better feel and my short game has enhanced.

Big dreams: Ervin lining up for a shot during a practice session.
“A physical trainer was also present to work on our fitness programme,’’he said.

Ervin’s fitness condition was put to the test when the participants played in a nine-hole competition. Chang finished second after a one over 37. The winner shot a two under-34.

This year will be an important one for Ervin. Besides wanting to excel in golf, he would also concentrate on his studies.

“I want to excel in both golf and studies. So I have to divide my time well. I will be playing in selected competitions,’’ he said.

The competitions lined up are the Selangor Amateur Open, Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open, Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) championships and the SportExcel junior circuit.

Ervin said he was happy with his progress and hoped to make an impact in the local competitions.

“I have to thank my coaches from the PGA Tour Academy, Dean Hartman, Tony Maloney and Lim Siew Ai who have been a big inspiration with their guidance,’’ said Chang.
