KEDAHAN MOHD AZRY ASYRAF TAKES PERAK AMATEUR OPEN BY ONE STROKE IN MERU VALLEY

Winners of the 2011 Perak Amateur Open, Vivienne Chin and Mohd Azry with Mr Low Teck San and Dato' Mohd Yaacob, VPs of MGA

Mohd Azry Asyraf of Kedah, won his first state amateur open title on Sunday with one stroke over national squad member Mohd Afif and veteran state amateur open winner, Gavin Kyle Green. Vivienne Chin is in a class of her own by amassing 18-stroke win to emerge as the lowest finisher in the field with total accumulated 3-day score of 4-under-par 212.

Conducted by the Meru Valley Golf & Country Club, the Perak Amateur Open features 62 men and 15 ladies from 14 states and neighboring countries. The event is an annual event in the Malaysian Golf Association fixtures and since 2008, it has been included in the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking that ranks the world's top amateur players.

Azry's tournament total of 213 won the event by one stroke, with Mohd Afif who finished second coming into the final round, carding a tournament total 214 to take second.

"It feels great," Azry said of his first state amateur open win. "I never imagined that I would win because the field is very good. I thought Gavin or another national squad member would win the tournament."

Rounding out the top five in the Men Division were Gavin Kyle Green at third with total score of 216. Tied for fourth were Abel Tam from Johor and Low Khai Loon from Perak each coming in with a tournament total of 218.

After leading by four strokes heading into the final round, Vivienne continued her hot streak putting with a 1-under-par 71 during Sunday's final round to polish off her tournament total at 4-under-par 212. According to Vivienne, after taking a short break to focus on her studies, she gave it all out to win this week.

"It feels awesome," Vivienne said. "To win by 18 strokes was just unbelievable, especially after I have not been in a competitive golf for quite some time."

At a tournament total of 230, Filipino's Dottie Ardina, came in second in the Ladies Division. Finished third was Amelia Yong ending with a tournament total of 232. University Utara Malaysia's student, Nur Dahiyah and Low Xi Suan rounded out the top five with a 235 each.

Rory McIlroy wins US Open

BETHESDA, Maryland (AP) - Rory McIlroy ran away with the US Open title Sunday, winning by eight shots and breaking the tournament scoring record by a whopping four strokes.

McIlroy shot 2-under 69 to close the four days at Congressional at 16-under 268, shattering a U.S. Open scoring record held by four players, including Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Jason Day finished at 8 under, good for second place in his second straight major.

Two months ago, McIlroy blew a four-shot lead on the last day at the Masters. But there was never any sign of a crack in this one.

The Northern Irishman started the day with an eight-shot lead and it never got lower. He became the third player in U.S. Open history to break 70 in all four rounds.

In complete control of his emotions and his game, McIlroy never slipped.

Two months after a collapse so thorough, some wondered if he could ever recover. After hitting his 10th tee shot near a cabin on the outskirts of Augusta National, he melted down, shot 80 and finished 15th at the Masters.

His shot on the 10th hole of this one showed how far he's come. On the 214-yard par-3, a downhill shot over water, McIlroy knocked the ball above the hole, then watched as it stopped for a split second and started spinning - backward, backward, before stopping an inch or two from the hole. He pursed his lips. "Oooh," he said. Yeah, that was nice.

He tapped in for a birdie that got him to 17-under par at a tournament that had never seen a score lower than 12 under before Friday.

He ended up at 16 under, coming short of the all-time major record of 19-under par - set by Tiger Woods at St. Andrews in 2000. But McIlroy put plenty of ink in that record book nonetheless.

He owns the scoring records for 36, 54 and 72 holes at the toughest test in golf.

He did it at age 22, the same age as Nicklaus when he won the first of his record 18 majors. The two have become friends and The Bear appreciates what he's been seeing.

"I think this kid's going to have a great career," Nicklaus said in an interview on NBC. "I don't think there's any question about it. He's got all the components."

Day ended up winning the race for second, and has now been runner-up in the first two majors of the year. Kevin Chappell, Lee Westwood and Robert Garrigus shared third spot at 6 under.

Pretty much everyone outside of Westwood conceded this one was over before the day even began, and as player after player came off the course, the testimonials poured in.

"As I've said before, I think he has probably the most talent I've ever seen from a golfer," said Luke Donald, the top-ranked player in the world, after finishing at 5-over par. "Lovely to watch him play, such a fluid motion, and he hits it far."

Said Phil Mickelson: "You can tell that Rory has had this type of talent in him for some time now, and to see him putting it together is pretty neat to see." He finished with a 71 on Sunday that left him 7 over.

And this from Graeme McDowell, last year's champion and a countryman of McIlroy: "Nothing this kid does ever surprises me. He's the best player I've ever seen."

McIlroy kept his head down throughout this round, sticking to his mental game plan of thinking about golf shots, not championships. Finally, as he walked to the 18th green, he waved and smiled to a gallery on hand for one of the most dominating performances the game has seen.

He became only the sixth player to shoot under par in all four rounds of a U.S. Open. Earlier, Garrigus became the fifth player to accomplish that feat - impressive, but a mere footnote on this day.

The dissection started right away, when McIlroy dug his approach shot on No. 1 out of a divot to 6 feet for a birdie. He made another one after hitting to tap-in range on the fourth hole to move to 16 under.

McIlroy didn't give a stroke back to par until No. 12 but it was only his third over the entire tournament - including his double bogey on No. 18 on Friday and a bogey on the 10th in the third round. As if to prove he was human, he three-putted the 17th green for another bogey. It was the first time he'd done that all week.

It was another calm, overcast day at Congressional, and there were more low scores to be had. The Blue Course has been taking a beating despite measuring 7,574 yards - second longest in U.S. Open history.

"It's not really a U.S. Open golf course, to be honest," Martin Kaymer said. But nobody took advantage better than McIlroy, whose dad was in the gallery, watching his son take a bite out of the record book.

After the final tap-in, Gerry McIlroy met his son as he walked off the green. "Happy Father's Day," the new champion said.

Happy Father's Day, indeed.

Gavin, Sharon shine in inaugural Mizuno junior meet

Gavin, Sharon shine in inaugural Mizuno junior meet

Kuala Lumpur, June 8: Gavin Kyle Green and Sharon Lau May Yen emerged the overall champions at the inaugural Mizuno Junior Open, which concluded yesterday at the Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort.

The event, which was title-sponsored by Mizuno and Royal Sporting House, the exclusive distributor of the Japanese golf brand in Malaysia, was the third leg of the SportExcel National Junior Golf Circuit and saw a full field of 120 golfers.

The 17-year-old Green managed to see off the challenge from fellow national player Kenneth De Silva to win the boys’ under-20 title, despite an uncharacteristic nine on the par-four 11th enroute to a closing 77. He registered a tournament total of 143 to take the title by a single stroke.

De Silva could have forced a playoff but lipped a two-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish in second place. Three-handicapper Chan Tuck Soon was third on 145 after carding an even-par 72 to end his campaign on 145.

Lau, 19, who is in Malaysia on summer holidays, notched rounds of 75 and 78 to emerge victorious in the girls’ under-20 division. The former national amateur is a proud product of SportExcel and is now pursuing her studies on a scholarship at Tarleton State University in Texas. She was recently named Division II Freshman of the Year by the National Golf Coaches Association for her exploits on the US collegiate circuit.

Two shots adrift were Asha Laskhsme Balakrishnan and Nur Musfirah Ilham Armalis, who finished level on 155.Johor-based Asha took second place on countback based on a better final day round.

Two new champions were also crowned at the event with Chong Yong registering her maiden win in the girls’ under-15 category while it was also a memorable occasion for Khavish Varman Varadan, who finished first in the boys’ under-12 division.

Royal Sporting House general manager – golf David Leow was satisfied with the outcome of the inaugural edition of the junior tournament, which is set to be an annual affair. “The feedback we have received has just been amazing. The juniors have been very enthusiastic and the additional items like the valuable goodie bags and the group photographs added a touch of class to the event, unlike existing junior tournaments.

Leow also expressed hope that the top five finishers in the boys’ under-20 division will prove themselves during the Mizuno Dream Cup Malaysian Qualifier later this year. “I hope that these amateurs will make full use of this golden opportunity to strut their games and earn a place to represent Malaysia in the final stage of the Gateway to the Open tournament. I feel that by opening this opportunity, we have provided a competitive platform for our representative to gauge his standard against his peers from across Asia.”
