SK BANDAR UTAMA DAMANSARA 2 TAKES THE LEAD IN "GOLF IN SCHOOL" PROGRAM

S. Sivachandhran, MGA former national player and Asian Tour player conducted a junior clinic during the launch of the SK Bandar Damansara 2 Golf Club. Siva (in red) seen here posing with students, Pn Ee Hong, Director of Sports Department, Datuk Mohamed Zain Yusuf and Haji Saidon Abas The Malaysian Golf Association recently announced that a large chunk of the RM 2 million Grant received from the Government will be utilized for the "Golf in School" program, an initiative to introduce golf to school children between 7-17 years old where they might not be exposed at all. Datuk Mohamed Zain Yusuf, the National Junior Development Program Chairman who is also the Vice President of MGA said that almost 100 percent of our children have never played golf before. Unlike popular sports like football, track and field, hockey, golf has not been introduced in school as part of the school's co-curriculum. "We hope that this initiative to introduce golf in school will grow the industry by making golf affordable and accessible. It has the potential to grow the game at grass root like never before." SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2, one of the seven schools selected as a pilot project has taken the lead to launch the "Golf Club" of SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2 recently in conjunction with their Sports Day. "The response from the children is overwhelming. Within a few days, more than 100 students have registered to join the Golf Club," said Haji Saidon Abas, Principal of SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2. "We are very grateful to the Ministry of Education as well as the Malaysian Golf Association for selecting our school to be a part of this program. We believe that this program will build confidence and self-esteem for the children." The pilot program will involve seven schools in Kuala Lumpur & Selangor that have demonstrated extraordinary commitment. Besides SK Bandar Damansara 2, the other schools selected are SMK Jalan 4, SMK Saujana Impian, SMK Sri Hartamas, SK Seri Hartamas, SMK St John and SK St John 1. The Golf in School Program is an eight-to twelve-week activity conducted for two hours immediately after school meets two times each week. Sessions are conducted indoors and outdoors at schools using traditional golf equipment. Teachers will be trained using MGA's existing blueprint to instruct children on core golf skills - etiquette, rules and fundamentals - which enables MGA Resident Pro to ascertain that participants are prepared for the next step of playing golf. "The MGA is encouraged by the initial response to the Golf in School Program," said MGA President Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor. "We look forward to the continued development of the program and are excited to provide more students with meaningful opportunities to play this great game, with the goal of producing lifelong players." The final session of the Golf in School Program will be conducted at a golf club so that MGA appointed Professionals can show the juniors how they can apply their skills learned in class as well as get them comfortable with going to the golf course. "We believe that this program will build the next generation of golfers which is one of the main objectives of the Association," explained Datuk Mohamed Zain Yusuf. Datuk Mohamed Zain also urged more private corporations to come forward to support this program financially for a sustainable and enriching golf junior program. MALAYSIA TO HOST KIDS GOLF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2012

Kuala Lumpur, 15 May 2012: The Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 tournament to be played over five days from 3 - 7 December for individual championship, also offers World amateur ranking points. Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is the International version of the prestigious US Kids Golf, an annual golf tentpole event for kids aged 5 - 18 years old. A one-day team event, based on the Ryder Cup format, will also be played with Malaysia, as the host country, will lead a team comprising Malaysian players and invited players from Australasia, to compete against a team lead by American, European, and international players aged 13 - 18 years. The event, presented by US Kids Golf, is organised by Royal Sporting House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and managed by Concept Collaboration Sdn Bhd. It is sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA), the governing body for golf in Malaysia. Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is being held in Asia for the first time. Previous US Kids Golf Championships were held in the United States and Europe. Players from more than 50 countries are expected to participate in this event. "We are confident in using this world-class event as a platform to position Malaysia as a major golfing destination," says David Leow, General Manager, Golf Division, Royal Sporting House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. The venue host for this event is Saujana Golf & Country Club and Glenmarie Golf & Country Club. The event is supported by Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). "The partnership with Royal Sporting House is an exemplary example of a successful public-private initiative," says Tony Nagamaiah, General Manager, International Events, MyCEB. "As part of the Economic Transformation Programme, MyCEB strives to ensure that Malaysia is promoted as the global centre stage for international events. We are convinced that this world-class event will properly position Malaysia as a major golfing destination." According to Nagamaiah, the Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is expected to attract 500 international participants and approximately 2,500 international tourists while generating RM38 million to the country's economy. "It is indeed an honour for Malaysia to host a trophy event like Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 as it promotes golf tourism while giving our junior golfers an opportunity to compete with some of the world's best players," notes Tan Sri Mohd Anuar Mohd Nor, President of the Malaysian Golf Association. Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is an offshoot of the US Kids Golf Foundation established in 2001. The US Kids Golf World Championship was envisioned as a platform to provide kids and their families to participate in the game of golf through instruction and competition. Its primary mission is to help kids have fun learning the basics of golf while encouraging interaction among family members to build lasting memories. "Malaysia has a sizeable golfing community, and we hope that taking this giant leap forward to engage aspiring junior golfers will broaden the base - and hopefully give birth to a pool of future local and international golf champions," anticipates Leow. Leow adds that Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 also aims to dispel the common perception that golf is an elitist game targeted exclusively for the rich and privileged. "Golf is an affordable and enjoyable sport for people of all ages and from all walks of life. This event marks the beginning of the next fun step to growing the game among youngsters. Think of it along the lines of when kids first played football or badminton. We believe the same model will spur greater interest in golf with kids given a chance to participate in this event." Leow acknowledges that the endorsement of the Malaysian Golf Association will bring a recreational structure to the game for kids of all skill levels.

KGPA date for new domestic junior meet

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has join forces with Royal Sporting House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to present the inaugural Malaysian Junior Closed Championship. The by-invitation only tournament will be staged from June 5 to 7 at Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam, providing domestic juniors with another high-quality event with attractive prizes sponsored by Mizuno and GolfHouse as well as the opportunity for the overall champions to participate in the Mizuno Dream Cup Malaysian Selection next year. A total of 120 juniors from across Malaysia are expected to participate in the three-day event, with players required to walk the course as buggies will only be provided to shuttle the players’ bags. The tournament is open to boys and girls born in 1994 or later with three age-group categories (under-12, under-14 and under-16) being contested for the boys and girls respectively. MGA president Admiral (R) Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor shared that the new tournament was part of the new junior development roadmap envisioned by the national association. â€Å“The Prime Minister (Rt Hon Dato Sri Najib Tun Razak) first broached the subject of organising a top quality junior meet about three years ago and agreed on his part to donate two specially-designed trophies for the championship. On our part, we felt that the time is right for us to introduce another premier junior golf event to our calendar, opening the chance for our young champions from across Malaysia to congregate and challenge themselves at this event,” said Mohd Anwar. â€Å“It was also timely that RSH Malaysia expressed their interest to come onboard as the presenting sponsor of a national-level junior event and and we are grateful for their three-year commitment to the event,” he added, noting that challenging championship layout at Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam will provide a stern test to the juniors, having hosted the MGA National Trials and Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open earlier this year. David Leow, RSH Malaysia’s general manager for golf explained that the sponsorship was part of RSH Malaysia’s commitment to see junior golf flourish in the country. â€Å“Last year, we organised the first-ever Mizuno Junior Open in conjunction with SportExcel and this year, we embraced this chance to be part of a bigger, national-scale tournament. It gives us great pleasure to be involved in this new and prestigious championship and we’re definitely commited with a long-term outlook. As a leading golf retail company, RSH Malaysia understands the importance of giving back to the game, especially at the junior level to encourage better participation amongst youngsters in the sport,” said Leow, who acknowledged that the future of sport in Malaysia will depend on nurturing enough young golfers to take over the baton Courtesy By : TheClubHouse

MOHD AFIF CONQUERS RSGC TO WIN AT THE TRIAL

Afif won the Trial 2012 Boys Division title

Durriyah won the Ladies Division at the Trial 2012

Durriyah stamps her supremacy in the ladies event

Kuala Lumpur , January 20 - For Afif and Durriyah, 90 holes of golf in 96-degree weather over five days tested their endurance and fitness level. At the conclusion of Friday's round, Afif and Durriyah played great golf to seal their victories. Afif shot 2-over-par 74 for 365 tournament total, 5 strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Durriyah shot 3-over-par 75 for 370 total, 3 strokes ahead Loy Hee Ying, her nearest rival.

The National Trial 2012 was being held at two separate venues, Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam from 16-18 January while the Royal Selangor Golf Club from 19-20 January to select members of the National Squad. Entries are through qualifiers held at five separate events last year; Selangor Amateur Open, Penang Amateur Open, Melaka Amateur Open, Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup and Sabah International Junior Masters.

15-year-old Loy shot the best score for the day at 2-under-70 to finish second, 2 strokes ahead of Vivienne Chin who shot 6-over-par 78 for 375 total.

"It was nerve-wracking," Durriyah said. "I was hoping to play bogey free but it wasn't to be. Nonetheless, I was happy that I managed to win the Trial this year."

Afif, who was leading after fourth round, cruised comfortably to win the Boys Division title. He said this victory prepares him well heading into this year golf schedule, which features top leading amateur events in the region as part of a member in the National Squad.

"This is a really strong field, so it's definitely a big confidence booster to know that I can play with these people," Afif said. "I really played well this week."

Finished second place in the Boys Division was Chan Tuck Soon who finished at 3-over-par 75 for 373 total. Tied in third place were Low Khai Jei and Daniel Ng who both fired a 3-over-par 75 to finish at 13-over-par 373 for the tournament.

Siva: Need to create larger pool of women golfers

THE SportExcel will be going through a soul searching exercise to address the lack of participation in the girls’ sections of their ongoing series of golf competitions including the junior open and Premier-Elite circuits for the new season.

SportExcel executive director C. Sivanandan (pic) admitted they needed to address the issue in their bid to create a bigger and healthier pool of potential golfers among girls in the combined Under-Nine section.

“In recent years, the girls’ participation rate has not been very encouraging. It is an area that we need to work on and attract more girls to pick up golf. The club-based training programmes and initiatives are also crucial in generating the girls’ interest to compete in the SportExcel circuits. We will be examining other ways to implement our development programme,” said Sivanan-dan.

However, SportExcel will be maintaining their proven record of hosting their junior competitions with five tournaments in the Premier-Elite series and 10 legs of junior open competitions as they lead up to the grand finals of both circuits in their competition calendar for the year.

For the new year, the youngsters will be swinging into action in the season’s opener of the Premier-Elite scheduled on Feb 25 before travelling down south for the back-to-back junior open tournaments.

The first leg of the junior open will be held at the Johor Golf and Country Club on March 12 and 13 followed by the another two-day outing at the A’Famosa Golf Resort on March 15 and 16.

“We were concerned about the hectic pace with a total of eight tournaments at the end of the year starting from mid-November.

“Besides the northern tour (at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort) in Penang and (at Clearwater Santuary) in Perak, the juniors will also be visiting Sabah for the final two legs (ninth and 10th) of the junior open.

“It is interesting to discover the young talents outside the Klang Valley by offering them an opportunity to fulfil their true potential,” Sivanandan said.
