Datuk Mohamed Zain Yusuf, the National Junior Development Program Chairman who is also the Vice President of MGA said that almost 100 percent of our children have never played golf before. Unlike popular sports like football, track and field, hockey, golf has not been introduced in school as part of the school's co-curriculum. "We hope that this initiative to introduce golf in school will grow the industry by making golf affordable and accessible. It has the potential to grow the game at grass root like never before." SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2, one of the seven schools selected as a pilot project has taken the lead to launch the "Golf Club" of SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2 recently in conjunction with their Sports Day. "The response from the children is overwhelming. Within a few days, more than 100 students have registered to join the Golf Club," said Haji Saidon Abas, Principal of SK Bandar Utama Damansara 2. "We are very grateful to the Ministry of Education as well as the Malaysian Golf Association for selecting our school to be a part of this program. We believe that this program will build confidence and self-esteem for the children." The pilot program will involve seven schools in Kuala Lumpur & Selangor that have demonstrated extraordinary commitment. Besides SK Bandar Damansara 2, the other schools selected are SMK Jalan 4, SMK Saujana Impian, SMK Sri Hartamas, SK Seri Hartamas, SMK St John and SK St John 1. The Golf in School Program is an eight-to twelve-week activity conducted for two hours immediately after school meets two times each week. Sessions are conducted indoors and outdoors at schools using traditional golf equipment. Teachers will be trained using MGA's existing blueprint to instruct children on core golf skills - etiquette, rules and fundamentals - which enables MGA Resident Pro to ascertain that participants are prepared for the next step of playing golf. "The MGA is encouraged by the initial response to the Golf in School Program," said MGA President Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor. "We look forward to the continued development of the program and are excited to provide more students with meaningful opportunities to play this great game, with the goal of producing lifelong players." The final session of the Golf in School Program will be conducted at a golf club so that MGA appointed Professionals can show the juniors how they can apply their skills learned in class as well as get them comfortable with going to the golf course. "We believe that this program will build the next generation of golfers which is one of the main objectives of the Association," explained Datuk Mohamed Zain Yusuf. MALAYSIA TO HOST KIDS GOLF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2012

Kuala Lumpur, 15 May 2012: The Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 tournament to be played over five days from 3 - 7 December for individual championship, also offers World amateur ranking points. Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is the International version of the prestigious US Kids Golf, an annual golf tentpole event for kids aged 5 - 18 years old. A one-day team event, based on the Ryder Cup format, will also be played with Malaysia, as the host country, will lead a team comprising Malaysian players and invited players from Australasia, to compete against a team lead by American, European, and international players aged 13 - 18 years. The event, presented by US Kids Golf, is organised by Royal Sporting House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and managed by Concept Collaboration Sdn Bhd. It is sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA), the governing body for golf in Malaysia. Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is being held in Asia for the first time. Previous US Kids Golf Championships were held in the United States and Europe. Players from more than 50 countries are expected to participate in this event. "We are confident in using this world-class event as a platform to position Malaysia as a major golfing destination," says David Leow, General Manager, Golf Division, Royal Sporting House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. The venue host for this event is Saujana Golf & Country Club and Glenmarie Golf & Country Club. The event is supported by Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). According to Nagamaiah, the Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is expected to attract 500 international participants and approximately 2,500 international tourists while generating RM38 million to the country's economy. "It is indeed an honour for Malaysia to host a trophy event like Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 as it promotes golf tourism while giving our junior golfers an opportunity to compete with some of the world's best players," notes Tan Sri Mohd Anuar Mohd Nor, President of the Malaysian Golf Association. Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 is an offshoot of the US Kids Golf Foundation established in 2001. The US Kids Golf World Championship was envisioned as a platform to provide kids and their families to participate in the game of golf through instruction and competition. Its primary mission is to help kids have fun learning the basics of golf while encouraging interaction among family members to build lasting memories. "Malaysia has a sizeable golfing community, and we hope that taking this giant leap forward to engage aspiring junior golfers will broaden the base - and hopefully give birth to a pool of future local and international golf champions," anticipates Leow. Leow adds that Kids Golf World Championship Malaysia 2012 also aims to dispel the common perception that golf is an elitist game targeted exclusively for the rich and privileged. "Golf is an affordable and enjoyable sport for people of all ages and from all walks of life. This event marks the beginning of the next fun step to growing the game among youngsters. Think of it along the lines of when kids first played football or badminton. We believe the same model will spur greater interest in golf with kids given a chance to participate in this event." KGPA date for new domestic junior meet

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has join forces with Royal Sporting House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to present the inaugural Malaysian Junior Closed Championship. The by-invitation only tournament will be staged from June 5 to 7 at Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam, providing domestic juniors with another high-quality event with attractive prizes sponsored by Mizuno and GolfHouse as well as the opportunity for the overall champions to participate in the Mizuno Dream Cup Malaysian Selection next year. A total of 120 juniors from across Malaysia are expected to participate in the three-day event, with players required to walk the course as buggies will only be provided to shuttle the players’ bags. The tournament is open to boys and girls born in 1994 or later with three age-group categories (under-12, under-14 and under-16) being contested for the boys and girls respectively. MGA president Admiral (R) Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor shared that the new tournament was part of the new junior development roadmap envisioned by the national association. “The Prime Minister (Rt Hon Dato Sri Najib Tun Razak) first broached the subject of organising a top quality junior meet about three years ago and agreed on his part to donate two specially-designed trophies for the championship. On our part, we felt that the time is right for us to introduce another premier junior golf event to our calendar, opening the chance for our young champions from across Malaysia to congregate and challenge themselves at this event,” said Mohd Anwar. “It was also timely that RSH Malaysia expressed their interest to come onboard as the presenting sponsor of a national-level junior event and and we are grateful for their three-year commitment to the event,” he added, noting that challenging championship layout at Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam will provide a stern test to the juniors, having hosted the MGA National Trials and Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open earlier this year. MGA receive RM2mil to develop homegrown champions

THE government will provide a grant of RM2 million to the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) to help produce homegrown golf champions.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said, under the leadership of their new president, Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor, it is hoped the association would continue their efforts to enhance the standard of golf in the country.

“To that effect, a contribution of RM2 million will be provided to develop the game at grassroots level.

“With that, hopefully more Malaysian players will be able to rise to a higher level,” said Najib at the prize giving ceremony of the Maybank Malaysian Open Golf Championship at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, Bukit Kiara, yesterday. — Bernama

Johor golfers dominate the field at JGCC

JOHOR Golf and Country Club (JGCC) duo of Abel Tam and Kuhanesh Ganesan took advantage of their local knowledge on their home course to dominate the top two positions in the boys’ Under-20 section at the opening leg of the SportExcel Junior circuit recently.

After a fair start of one-over 73 in the first round of 18 hole, the zero-handicapper Abel settled for a total of seven-over 223 for clear six strokes victory over three-handicapper Kuhanesh.

The experienced Abel carded identical scores of three-over 75 for the final two rounds in the three-day meet.

Another Johor representative Reza Iskandar accumulated 18-over 234 for third.

Another JGCC entry Qistina Balqis Azhar also provided the joy emerging as the winner of the girls’ Under-15 contest.

The 11-handicapper Qistina edged Kluang’s Chong Yong with comfortable three-stroke advantage chalking up 42-over 258 while Darul Ehsan Golf Club’s Chong Yee Mun came in third (268).
