A'FAMOSA TO HOST THE 109TH MALAYSIAN AMATEUR OPEN

A'Famosa set to host the 109th Malaysian Amateur Open. It was announced today at the Press Conference held at MGA's office. The tournament will be held from May 19-22, 2011.

The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) will be organising the prestigious Malaysian Amateur Open in historical Malacca from May 19 to 22, 2011 with the A'Famosa Golf Resort as the host venue of the nation's oldest amateur tournament.

Attracting participants mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, Malaysian contenders are no more accorded automatic entry as they are required to qualify through the Sabah Amateur Open, Sarawak Amateur Open and Malaysian Amateur Close tournaments.

"The MGA is working towards achieving the target of having Malaysian champions in both the men's and the newly created ladies' division. It has been a while since we've had a Malaysian name engraved on the championship trophy," said MGA President, Datuk Robin Loh.

"As locals no longer enjoy automatic entry, the MAO is a culmination of the qualifying rounds for the Peninsular (45th Malaysian Amateur Close scheduled for April 5-7), Sabah Amateur Open (April 22-24) and Sarawak Amateur Open (May 13-15)."

Since its inauguration in 1894, the Malaysian Amateur Open Golf Championship (now better known as the MAO) has gone through several transformations in name, challenge trophies, title sponsors and format of play.

This will be only the third edition that will include a ladies' division after it was introduced at the 107th Malaysian Amateur Open at the Kelab Golf Sarawak in 2009.

R. Nachimuthu was the last Malaysian to have won the title when the championship was held at the Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah in 1997. There have been several near-misses for our players as was the case with Mohd Iylia Jamil finishing runner-up to champion Mhark Fernando of the Philippines at the Damai Laut Golf & Country Club last year.

In the ladies' division, 17-year-old Thidapa Suwannapura from Thailand overcame a three-stroke deficit in the final round to clinch the title by two shots over compatriot Yupaporn Kawinpakorn with our national player Kelly Tan finishing third in the 2010 edition.

"It is an honour for us here at A'Famosa Golf Resort being given the opportunity to host the Malaysian Amateur Open for the first time. We started priming the 6,397-metre, par-72 combination of Rocky and Palm Courses since late 2010 to ensure its tip-top condition, befitting the stature of the tournament," said Julian Lau Joo Liang, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of A'Famosa Golf Resort.

The Malaysian Amateur Open has been a fertile ground in producing top players as evident by its list of past champions that include the likes of Australians Robert Allenby and Andrew Dodt, Singapore's Mardan Mamat, Filipino Juvic Pagunsan and India's Shiv Kapur.

Having survived the colonial era, two World Wars and the upheavals of the nation to the major amateur golf championship that it has become today, the Malaysian Amateur Open's steady rise in stature was further cemented in 2006 when it was included as an event in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, which ranks the world's top amateur golfers.

In its effort to unearth new golfing talents, the MGA will also be conducting a Junior Golf Clinic in tandem with the 109th Malaysian Amateur Open at the A'Famosa Golf Resort.

Junior golfer says overseas training scholarship a valuable experience

Junior golfer says overseas training scholarship a valuable experience

It was a new learning experience for Chang Ervin when he attended a training stint at the TPC Sawgrass in Florida, United States recently.

Ervin, a Form One student of Seri Suria, said the stint gave him an opportunity to experience the life of a professional golfer.

“I had the chance to meet some of the world’s top professional golfers such as Vijay Singh, Fred Funk, Natalie Gulbis and Nick Price. I would cherish the stint for a long time,’’ said Ervin after a training session at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club recently.

Proud feat: Ervin with the prize he received after the training stint in Florida.
Ervin was one of eight junior golfers from the Asean region to be awarded the overseas training scholarship.

The others were Malaysia’s Loy Hee Ying, Indonesians Jordan Surya Irawan and Nadya Rosiana, Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Virunpat Olankitkunchai and Singaporeans Tan Yan Ming and Rachel Lim.

The eight were selected by CIMB after a series of training camps conducted by the PGA Tour Academy from June to September last year.

CIMB initiated the camp in conjunction with the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic held at the Mines Resort and Golf Club.

PGA Tour Academy coaches —Travis Fulton, Shane Gillespie and John Stahlschmidt — conducted the camp.

Ervin said the coaches were helpful and evaluated his techniques especially swing and putting.

“They used a 3D equipment to analyse my putting and swing. It was discovered that my shoulder was too open. Now I have a better feel and my short game has enhanced.

Big dreams: Ervin lining up for a shot during a practice session.
“A physical trainer was also present to work on our fitness programme,’’he said.

Ervin’s fitness condition was put to the test when the participants played in a nine-hole competition. Chang finished second after a one over 37. The winner shot a two under-34.

This year will be an important one for Ervin. Besides wanting to excel in golf, he would also concentrate on his studies.

“I want to excel in both golf and studies. So I have to divide my time well. I will be playing in selected competitions,’’ he said.

The competitions lined up are the Selangor Amateur Open, Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open, Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) championships and the SportExcel junior circuit.

Ervin said he was happy with his progress and hoped to make an impact in the local competitions.

“I have to thank my coaches from the PGA Tour Academy, Dean Hartman, Tony Maloney and Lim Siew Ai who have been a big inspiration with their guidance,’’ said Chang.

MAYBANK CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE MALAYSIAN OPEN

Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin, Chairman of Maybank at the MMO 2011 PC with Datuk Robin Loh,

http://www.mgaonline.com.my/articledetail.asp?id=3134

The event will take place at the
West Course of the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club from 14th - 17th April 2011.

Monday, January 17, 2011 - Arcis Communications
Kuala Lumpur, 17 January 2011- Maybank today announced its continued support of
the nation's premier golf tournament following its five-year sponsorship of the Maybank
Malaysian Open between 2006 and 2010. With the announcement, Maybank has confirmed its commitment for another five years as the title sponsor of the Malaysian Open, increasing the tournament's prize purse to USD 2.5 million at the same time. In
addition, Maybank today also announced the confirmed participation of young sensations Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel from South Africa and Rory McIlroy from Ireland, who will be headlining the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 field of players in the 156 player line-up competing for top honours later this year.

"Maybank will continue to provide key support for our Open for another 5 years at this
launch of the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 season. Maybank is Malaysia's leading
financial services group with firm aspirations to be a regional leader. Where we operate,
we have been proud to have played a role in our communities. In progressing our communities, we have chosen golf to be a key sports platform for us to be associated with, because especially through association with the country's premier golf event, the MMO, we know we are in the company of champions of global note and hope that one day, we would have contributed to the development of Malaysian golf champions of
similar stature," said Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, Chairman of
Maybank, in announcing Maybank's sponsorship of the national open for the sixth consecutive year.

"For each of the last five years, Maybank has felt pride to have been associated with our
Open, which has built such a rich heritage over the years to become one of this region's
premier golfing event," said Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, Chairman
of Maybank.

On the star players, Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor added, "We are
thrilled to welcome Oosthuizen, Schwartzel and McIlroy to the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open. This is the first time in the Malaysian Open history a newly crowned Open Championship winner will be participating in our tournament. I believe that the appearance displayed by these three rising stars will attract more fans to the sport, especially after witnessing their superb sportsmanship."

The Malaysian Golf Association ("MGA") welcomed the announcement of the sponsorship renewal, acknowledging that the Maybank Malaysian Open is the jewel in the crown of Malaysia professional golf.

"The Maybank Malaysian Open has been instrumental in cultivating and supporting local
talent over the years, giving them to opportunity to hone their skills on an international platform against some of the biggest names in the golfing world. Looking back 50 years, golf has truly come a long way in Malaysia. With tournaments like the Maybank
Malaysian Open spurring on our local professionals, giving them priority and ensuring
that their needs are taken care of, we are optimistic that a Malaysian golfer will one day
represent our country in the Olympics," said MGA President Datuk Robin Loh.

This year, the tournament reaches a milestone as it celebrates its 50th anniversary as
some of the world's best golfers gather to compete at the renowned Kuala Lumpur Golf
& Country Club from the 14th to 17th April 2011.

""he Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) is pleased to be chosen once again as the venue for yet another world class tournament. We are looking forward to hosting a list of illustrious players at the much-anticipated Maybank Malaysian Open 2011. The West Course has received positive feedback from the top players during the MMO last year and we believe the participating golfers this year can expect another wonderful but challenging experience on a golf course that has been ranked the best in the country," said Dato' Tunku Putra Badlishah, Director of Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

Making history as the first ever co-sanctioned tournament in Asia by both the European
and Asian Tours in 1999, the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 will feature top players
from the rankings of both these world-leading circuits to make up the 156-player line-up.
Points earned at the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 will go towards the Asian Tour
Order of Merit, and will also add to the player's 2011 Race to Dubai Ranking, granting
them a chance to qualify for the season-ending Dubai World Championship.

Kyi Hla Han, Executive Chairman of the Asian Tour, said, "The Maybank Malaysian
Open is one of the most important golf championships on the Asian Tour and on behalf
of our highly talented players, I would like to extend our fullest appreciation to our title
sponsor Maybank and the event custodian, the Malaysian Golf Association for their
commitment and passion to the game. It is wonderful news that Maybank has committed
to the championship for another five years which will no doubt raise further the stature of
the Maybank Malaysia Open."

Echoing this sentiment was Vicky Jones, Client Services Director, European Tour, said
"We are delighted that the 2011 tournament will again be co-sanctioned with the Asian
Tour and that we are returning to a familiar and popular venue at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. It is always a pleasure to have our players experience the best that Asia
has to offer and we look forward to the 50th edition of the Malaysian Open under
Maybank's title sponsorship."

This highly respected tournament has seen the likes of Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington,
Retief Goosen, Michael Campbell, Lee Westwood and Nick Faldo making waves on its
courses over the years. In 2010, this prestigious event was won by 19-year old Korean
sensation Noh Seung-Yul who then went on to become Asian Tour's number one player.

"I extend my sincere appreciation to Maybank for continuing its support as the title sponsor for the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011. This certainly marks a good start to the celebration of the 50th edition of the Malaysian Open - the only national open to consistently be held annually in this part of the world since 1962. Some very exciting things are in store this year to mark this momentous milestone. Together with Maybank
and the MGA, we have indeed built a legacy of champions and will continue to do so as we grow in the years to come," said Tan Sri Mohd Razali Abd Rahman, the organiser.

In addition to the series of announcements, Maybank also revealed the appointment of
local heroes Danny Chia and Mohd Shaaban Hussin as the Ambassadors of the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011. "Our support for Malaysian golfers stretches from developing youth through our Junior Development Programme, to Malaysian
professionals. This year will see the number of Malaysians in the field increase from 17
to 22 golfers. I am also pleased that this year, we will sponsor two Malaysian golfers -
Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin. It is our intention to help some of those affected by
our support to realize their potential and hopefully become international champions,"
said Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor.

"Danny made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win an Asian Tour event when
he won the Taiwan Open in 2002. He also qualified for the third time to play in the British Open, becoming the first Malaysian to play in all four rounds at the British Open at St
Andrews, the oldest major in the world," added Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat
Mohd Nor. "Shaaban, who turned pro in 2003, proved himself a talent to watch when he
beat over 100 local professionals to qualify for the inaugural PGA Tour-sanctioned event
in Malaysia last year. He has the makings of a great player.

A star-studded field is expected at the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open, with
the Malaysian professionals competing with some of the world's best players for the
championship title. With a USD 2.5 million prize purse up on offer, spectators can expect
an exciting tournament this April. The four-day co-sanctioned event will take place at the
West Course of the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club from 14th - 17th April 2011.

"Low dan saya masih terikat selepas play-off lubang pertama.

IMPRESSIVE AZMAN EMERGES WINNER OF THE NATIONAL TRIAL

IMPRESSIVE AZMAN EMERGES WINNER OF THE NATIONAL TRIAL
Friday, January 14, 2011 - MGA Web Editor

Winners of National Trial 2011; Azman and Isza posed with YBhg. Dato' Haji Mohd Yaacob Mohd Kassim, Vice President of MGA who is also the Chairman of the National Team Management Sub-Committee
Mohd Azman Basharudin displayed consistency and an impressive form to clinch the top spot in the Malaysian Golf Association's National Trial, finishing with a superb tournament total of six-under par 138 today.

The two-day trial saw 44 young players, consisting of 33 men and 11 ladies battling it out at the 6,227 metre, par-72 Peransang Templer Golf Club for berths in the 2011 National Team.

"I think I owe my consistent score these past 2 days to my iron shots and putts. This is my first time playing here (PTGC). The course is pretty tough but it's a good mix of fast and slow green, I love it," the 18-year old Azman who fired a three-under-par 69 today.

Dubbed as the new player to be watched this year by V. Gunalen, national team coach, Azman who is the Kedah Amateur Open 2010 champion, has been groomed and exposed to both national and international tournaments since last year and he has matured nicely to a consistent performer.

Second place went to the biggest climber of the day, Gavin Kyle Green, whose 3-under par 69 was way better than his 74 yesterday. Gavin's final standing of one-under-par 143 left him tied with 2010 Singapore Junior Open champion, Jeremiah Kim who shot a 1-under par 71 today.

Meanwhile in the ladies category, Isza Fariza Ismail who is turning 17 this May, held on to her lead and ultimately seized the top spot. She finished her round today with 1-over par 73 for a two-day total of three-over-par 147, one stroke ahead of Viviene Chin. Iman Ahmad Nordin was third, seven strokes behind the champion.

"My round was okay but I did some silly mistakes here and there. I sank in a birdie at the first hole but also had two bogeys today," said Isza who was familiar with the layout, having won the Faldo Series Asia held at the club last year.

According to Dato' Haji Mohd Yaacob Mohd Kassim, Vice President of the Malaysian Golf Association who is also the manager of the National Team, the final line-up for the national team this year would be announced after the exco meeting soon.

"I want to congratulate all the players who has made it this far and I appreciate all of your determination for the game of golf. However, we will not be announcing the national team ensemble yet as the committee will have to discuss and fine-tune the line-up for this year," Yaacob said.
